September – December 2008

This fall has been one of my busiest times. Following the very successful ‘Rockers’ exhibition at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York, and the opening of an exhibition in Mexico City and then another at the Liss Gallery in Toronto, I went to Paris, London, Los Angeles and back to Mexico to promote my new book ‘New York Dolls – Photographs by Bob Gruen’. There were book signings and more openings, a big birthday party and great live shows to go to in between. Check it all out below!

Sept 22 - London - At MOJO magazine I said hello to editor Phil Alexander and art director Mark Wagstaff and thanked them for doing such a nice job laying out my Clash at Shea Staduim photos.

Sept 23 - London - Gordon McHarg showed me his 'Subway Gallery' at the underpass below Edgware Rd/Harrow Rd crossing in London, and I got a photo of him in front of the display he made of Joe Strummer's comment.

Sept 25 - Paris - In Paris I had a chance to have lunch and catch up with Mick Jones and Tony James who were there promoting their new Carbon Silicon CD.

Sept 25 - Paris - My friend Bruno Blum gave me a ride around Paris on his motorbike, which was pretty exciting. Then he was off to the African country of Eritrea to produce music with some local musicians there.

Oct 3 - NYC - There was a signing event for my New York Dolls book at the International Center for Photography in New York. We drew the largest crowd they've ever had and sold out all the books available!

A highlight of the Woodstock event was a chance to say hello to Ed Sanders, who I first saw in the band the Fugs, who inspired the New York Dolls and so many more.

Oct 23 - NYC - Coinciding with the release of my new book "New York Dolls - Photographs by Bob Gruen" all girl New York Dolls tribute band Prima Ballerina led by Tammy Faye Starlight played at my birthday party at the R Bar in New York. The highlight of the night came when original New York Doll, Sylvain Sylvain, joined them onstage and played the Dolls hit 'Trash'.

At my birthday party we had a big cake with a copy of the drawing Keith Haring made for me on it. It was a good thing the cake was so big because there were a lot of people at the party and by the end the cake was all gone.

Oct 28 - Mexico - Then it was off to Monterrey, Mexico for an exhibition and talk at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. The trip started with a press confrence.

The exhibition was set up by my friend Fernando Aceves, the best rock photographer in Mexico. We went for a drive outside Monterrey and came across the 'Woodstock Park' a Rock and Roll cantina in the desert!

I gave a talk in a big hall at the university which was attended by over 600 people. After my talk I signed books and flyers for 2 hours.

Dec 20 - NYC - The fastastic Labelle started their reunion tour at the famous Apollo Theater. Faced with a power failure in the fourth song, they finished the show singing without microphones and rescheduled the full show for the next night. They are amazing!
